Civic Development Preconference
Society for Research on Child Development
Biennial Meeting
Wednesday April 1, 2009
Denver, CO
This preconference brought together senior and emerging scholars with a shared interest in civic development in childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood. The goal of the meeting was to assemble an interdisciplinary group to discuss recent trends, theories, and findings with a specific focus on the processes of youth civic development. Discussion focused on the developmental roots of civic engagement, developmental outcomes fostered by civic participation, and developmental contexts that promote civic development (e.g., family, school, community). The meeting also served as a forum for researchers and practitioners to connect, network, and engage in collaborative discussion. Topic-specific breakout sessions covered a range of civic themes, such as service-learning, civic education, identity, community service, and activism.
